Shamva Gold Mine 125usd loan

Shamva is on the verge of one of the biggest economic transformations in its history following a US$125 million investment by Mutapa Gold Resources to expand operations at Shamva Gold Mine. The landmark investment is expected to create 800 additional jobs, increasing the mine’s workforce from 1 000 to about 1 800 employees, making it by far the largest employer in Shamva.

The funding will finance the development of the Shamva Hill Open Pit Project, a major expansion that is projected to increase annual gold production by 264 percent, from 0.8 tonnes to 2.4 tonnes. Construction is expected to begin later this year, with commissioning scheduled for 2028.

The expansion represents far more than increased mining activity. It signals a major boost for the long term development of Shamva into a modern and vibrant mining town. A larger workforce means more families relocating to the area, greater demand for housing, shopping centres, schools, healthcare services, transport, banking, entertainment facilities and other essential infrastructure.

As employment rises by 80 percent, the local economy is expected to experience significant growth through increased spending by workers and contractors. This presents new opportunities for entrepreneurs, property developers, retailers, restaurants, service providers and investors seeking to establish businesses in Shamva.

Speaking on the development, Shamva Gold Mine General Manager Engineer Gift Mapakame said the project would create substantial employment opportunities while delivering lasting benefits to surrounding communities.

“Shamva Hill will bring with it a lot of employment opportunities and will be able to take up close to around 1 800 employees, including contractors and other employees that will be running the plant.”

He added that the project would also include major investments in infrastructure such as water supply, electricity, healthcare and education, benefiting both the mine and the wider community.

Mutapa Gold Resources Chief Executive Officer Patrick Maseva Shayawabaya described the financing as a significant milestone in the company’s ambitious growth strategy.

Initially seeking US$75 million, the company secured US$125 million after seven Zimbabwean financial institutions exceeded expectations by providing an additional US$50 million. The surplus funding will also support production expansion at Jena Mine, increasing output from approximately 45 kilograms to 100 kilograms of gold annually.

The expansion forms part of Mutapa Gold Resources’ broader vision of becoming a US$1 billion annual revenue mining company, with gold production targeted to grow from 115 000 ounces to over 200 000 ounces in the coming years.

For Shamva, the impact extends well beyond mining. Increased economic activity is expected to stimulate urban development, improve public infrastructure, attract private investment and accelerate the growth of the town. Demand for accommodation, commercial buildings, roads, utilities, public transport and community services is likely to rise significantly as the population grows.

This investment positions Shamva as one of Zimbabwe’s emerging mining and economic growth centres, with the potential to become a modern town supported by sustainable industrial development, employment creation and improved living standards.

Livezw Analysis: The US$125 million investment is not only a victory for Mutapa Gold Resources but also a defining moment for Shamva. The creation of 800 new jobs, combined with major infrastructure development and increased economic activity, has the potential to reshape the town’s future, creating new opportunities for businesses, investors and residents alike.
