Zimbabwe Media Commission Validates Draft Climate Change Reporting Manual
The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) today convened a validation workshop for the Draft Climate Change Reporting Manual, bringing together key stakeholders from government, the media, academia, development partners and environmental organisations to review and strengthen the document before its final adoption.
The workshop focused on ensuring that the manual becomes a practical guide for journalists and media practitioners reporting on climate change issues in Zimbabwe. Participants examined the draft in detail and contributed recommendations aimed at improving its relevance, accuracy and effectiveness in supporting responsible environmental reporting.
The programme featured presentations covering climate change fundamentals, national climate policy and governance, the impacts of climate change, adaptation and mitigation responses, practical approaches to climate journalism, as well as ethics in climate reporting. Interactive plenary discussions allowed stakeholders to share their expertise and experiences, resulting in valuable recommendations to enhance the manual.
Director Chisoko, representing the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, officially opened the workshop. In his remarks, he underscored the critical role of the media in communicating climate issues accurately and responsibly. He stressed the need for journalism that is factual, ethical, balanced and focused on solutions that empower communities to respond to the challenges posed by climate change.
The Zimbabwe Media Commission reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening climate journalism through collaboration with stakeholders across different sectors. By validating the Draft Climate Change Reporting Manual, the Commission is taking an important step towards equipping journalists with the knowledge and tools required to produce credible, balanced and impactful climate reporting.
As climate change continues to affect communities across Zimbabwe through changing weather patterns, droughts, floods and other environmental challenges, the media has an increasingly important responsibility to inform the public, promote awareness and support national climate action through professional and evidence based journalism.
The validation workshop reflects Zimbabwe’s continued efforts to build a media landscape that promotes informed public discourse and contributes to sustainable environmental development.
